Yesterday millions of women and young girls across the world; watched in awe and realize that no goal is too big to achieve. We witnessed history we watched, Kamala Harris, the first woman, first Black woman, and first person of Indian descent, ever elected sworn in as Vice President. Vice-President Harris has shattered a glass ceiling we have not been able to break in over 200 years. It is a time to celebrate! Harris often quotes her mother, Shyamala Gopalan Harris, in speeches. Stating: “You may be the first to do many things, but make sure you are not the last.”
For the first time in history, women can celebrate seeing themselves when they look at the vice president of the United States. Young girls can see themselves represented in the all-female White House senior communications team. Vice President-elect Kamala Harris said representation is important as the Biden-Harris administration is set up to be the most diverse in history. “Because representation matters and, in a democracy, the elected leaders should reflect the experiences and the lives and the perspective of all the people,” Harris exclusively told theGrio in an interview on Dec 19, 2020.
Although there is more progress to make, and representation is not enough to end systemic racism, this is a moment of celebration.
A moment where we honor those that came before and set the stage for those that come after.
