OUR STORY

Founded in 1992 by Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward, RE·Center Race & Equity in Education (formerly known as The Discovery Center) uses its core strengths of facilitation and partnership development to work with others to eliminate the root causes of racism and oppression in K-12 education.

For more than 25 years, RE·Center’s primary programming centered on its highly-respected Residential Camp program. Now, we have shifted from more traditional diversity and inclusion work to anti-racism and systems change within K-12 education.

RE·Center’s programs operate on several levels to create environments and supports where change can occur. Today, RE·Center provides facilitated trainings and programs for students, teachers, administrators, parents, and community members on an internal, and interpersonal level. Our trainings provide important context by demonstrating and highlighting examples of institutional, and ideological/cultural racism, which is inherent in systems, organizations, media, and societal structures.

RE·Center’s programming is geared around a vision of an equitable and just world where all youth have what they need to grow and thrive. The goal is to create an ecosystem of empowered students supported by conscious, critically-thinking adults, and supportive and safe schools and communities.

We recognize that our story is ever-evolving as we continue this journey.
